Project Overview

This project is a conceptual poster created for the 6th BICM International Poster Design Competition, addressing the growing social and psychological impact of gambling addiction. Rather than portraying gambling as a form of entertainment, the project reframes it as a public health issue by exposing its emotional, financial, and social consequences. The visual concept is built around the message that the true cost of addiction extends far beyond monetary loss, transforming a familiar casino environment into a metaphor for dependency, isolation, and the gradual loss of control.

The design process began with extensive research into gambling addiction, examining its psychological effects, social normalization, risk factors, and long-term consequences. This investigation was complemented by a conceptual analysis that contrasted the industry's normalized discourse with a more critical perspective focused on prevention and awareness. From these insights, key themes such as risk, addiction, uncertainty, and loss were translated into visual language through keyword mapping, image generation matrices, and iterative sketch exploration, allowing the strongest narrative direction to emerge before production.

The visual identity is intentionally minimal yet emotionally charged, relying on a restrained palette dominated by deep blacks and saturated reds to evoke danger, tension, and psychological distress. Strong contrast directs attention toward the isolated central figure, while the surrounding slot machines create an immersive environment that symbolizes the inescapable cycle of addiction. Rather than functioning as decorative elements, the casino imagery becomes an integral part of the narrative, reinforcing the relationship between temptation, dependency, and loss.

This contrast between attractive commercial aesthetics and the poster's somber narrative strengthens the conceptual impact. Careful attention to composition, perspective, scale, and negative space establishes a clear visual hierarchy, guiding the viewer from the headline to the protagonist and finally toward the supporting message.

Multiple concepts were evaluated before converging on a solution that communicated vulnerability without relying on explicit imagery. Through the integration of three-dimensional rendering, digital compositing, and cinematic lighting, the project demonstrates how graphic design can function as a persuasive communication tool, transforming research-driven insights into a compelling visual narrative that raises awareness of gambling addiction.
